New York State Department of Taxation and Finance Commissioner Robert L. Megna today announced that Mark Northrup, 52, the owner of Power Tech Services, located at 92 Portland Avenue, Rochester, was sentenced recently in Rochester City Court to a one-year conditional discharge and 80 hours community service after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge of failing to file sales tax returns.
Northrup, of 4554 Goose Street, Stanley, was arrested in April and subsequently filed his delinquent tax returns, which covered a period from September 1, 2005 to February 29, 2008. He then paid the Department of Taxation and Finance $23,404.19 in back sales taxes, penalties and interest.
Prior to his arrest, the Tax Department’s Special Investigations Unit in Rochester determined that Northrup was still in business even though Department records indicated that he had not filed the required returns.
Commissioner Megna thanked Monroe County District Attorney Michael Green and his staff prosecuting the case. Megna also commended the staff of the Rochester Special Investigations Unit, particularly investigators David Pohle and Jody White, for their efforts in the investigation leading to Northrup’s arrest and conviction.
Commissioner Megna added: "In the past year, the Department has stepped-up its commitment to combating tax fraud as part of our effort to close the tax gap. Our newly formed Special Investigations Unit is working across the state with local district attorneys to expose and prosecute those who engage in tax fraud. We target cash businesses that underreport taxable sales, defraud customers and cheat honest state taxpayers of sales tax revenue."
